How does the Carrier Exchange work?

The Carrier Exchange uses an API (Application Programming Interface) to create a secure connection between BerniePortal and insurance carriers through Ideon, a middleware platform that standardizes the communication process.

The Integration Flow

Once you configure and activate a carrier integration in BerniePortal, the system follows this workflow:

1. Data Transmission: When enrollment information is entered or updated in BerniePortal (such as new enrollments, terminations, dependent additions, or coverage changes).

2. Carrier Validation: The carrier receives the enrollment information and validates it against their own records. Different carriers sync at different times and frequencies throughout the week, so updates aren't always instantaneous.

3. Discrepancy Reporting: If the carrier identifies any mismatches between what BerniePortal reported and what they have in their system, they send messages back. These messages appear in your Manage tab as either "Failures" (critical issues blocking enrollment) or "Warnings" (potential issues that need attention).

4. Resolution and Re-sync: When you resolve a carrier message in BerniePortal, the corrected information is communicated back to the carrier during their next scheduled sync.

The Implementation Process

Carrier integrations move through three status stages:

  • Pending: The integration has been configured but isn't active yet. During this period (typically up to 60 days), you must continue managing eligibility manually with the carrier.
  • Active: The integration is fully functional and enrollment data is being transmitted between BerniePortal and the carrier.
  • Disabled: The integration has been turned off and no information is being communicated.
