What is a "1094-C ALE" subgroup and why is it important?
A 1094-C ALE subgroup is how BerniePortal organizes employees for 1095-C form generation. Every employee who needs a 1095-C must be assigned to a 1094-C ALE subgroup—otherwise, their form won't be generated.
Why It Matters
The subgroup assignment tells BerniePortal which employees to include when generating forms. If an employee is not assigned to a 1094-C ALE subgroup, no 1095-C will be created for them.
This is the first thing you'll verify in Stage 1: Organize of the filing process.
How to Check Subgroup Assignments
- Navigate to Employees in BerniePortal
- Use the filter dropdown and select "1094-C ALE - Not Assigned"
- If no employees appear, you're all set—everyone is assigned
- If employees appear, they need to be assigned to a subgroup before generating forms
Why You Might Have Multiple Subgroups
Some organizations have more than one 1094-C subgroup. Common reasons include:
- Multiple EINs or legal entities
- Different benefits subgroups with different coverage configurations
- Aggregated ALE Group members filing separately
If you have multiple subgroups, each one must be configured and filed individually.
