Understanding Premium Types

Understanding Premium Types

When setting up a plan in BerniePortal or submitting a buildout request, you’ll encounter several premium type configurations. Each determines how rates are entered and applied to enrollees. Below is a breakdown of the four types that can be used in BerniePortal: Composite, Age Banded, Age Banded (Three Table), and Age Banded Multiperson.

1. Composite Premiums

How it works:
Composite rates are flat rates per coverage tier, not based on the employee’s or dependent’s age.

2. Age Banded

How it works:
Premiums vary based on age ranges (called “age bands”). Each band covers a range of ages, such as 0–14, 15–15, 16–16, etc., and the same set of age bandings is applied to all members (employee and dependents).

3. Age Banded (Three Table)

How it works:
This premium type uses separate tables for Employee and Spouse premiums. Each table has its own set of age bands, allowing different age-based premiums for each covered individual. Child premiums often use “Number of Children” instead of age bands. This type is only applicable to health plans and is very rare.

4. Age Banded Multiperson

How it works:
This type allows multiple coverage tiers (Employee Only, Employee + Spouse, etc.) combined with age bands. Each tier has a separate premium column for each age band where both age and tier impact rates.
