Understanding Current Offer vs. Upcoming Offer vs. Prior Offer and the Offer Overview Area

About these offers

Each benefit subgroup has three offer areas: Prior Offer, Current Offer, and Upcoming Offer. Together they show which plans are available for enrollment now, which plans are staged for open enrollment, and which plans applied before the most recent open enrollment.

Offer Overview shows all three offer areas side by side for one subgroup. Use it to compare plan sets and renewal dates without opening each offer area separately.

Who can view

Employers with Benefits enabled, and Benefits Feature Admins with access to the subgroup, can open Offer Overview. Users who are masquerading as the employer use the employer path.

Open Offer Overview

For employers:
  1. Select Benefits in the top navigation menu.
  2. Select Subgroups in the secondary navigation menu.
  3. In the BENEFITS SUBGROUPS column, select the subgroup name.
  4. In the tertiary navigation, select Offer Overview.
For Benefits Feature Admins, select Benefits in the top navigation menu (BerniePortal opens the Subgroups list), select the subgroup name, then select Offer Overview.

BerniePortal opens the subgroup with tertiary navigation that includes Offer Overview, Current Offer, Upcoming Offer, and Configure. Opening a subgroup from the list selects Configure by default.

On Offer Overview, BerniePortal lists plans under Prior Offer, Current Offer, and Upcoming Offer. Plans are grouped by benefit type. Each plan shows its name and renewal date. Select a plan name to open that plan for the matching offer.

For an overview of the Subgroups list, see Understanding the Benefits Subgroups Area.

Prior Offer

Prior Offer is the set of benefits that were in Current Offer before the most recent open enrollment was opened. When open enrollment starts, those plans move from Current Offer to Prior Offer.

Some employees enroll in Prior Offer plans based on timing—for example, a new hire whose benefits effective date is before the renewal date of the renewal group that triggered open enrollment. For eligibility details and examples, see Prior Offer FAQs.

Current Offer

Current Offer is the active set of benefits for the subgroup. It is the offer used for new hires whose benefits effective date is on or after the renewal date of the renewal group that triggered open enrollment, and for other enrollments that use the current plans.

To view and manage the current plan set for a subgroup, see Current Offer - Benefits.

Upcoming Offer

Upcoming Offer is the set of benefits staged for open enrollment. Those plans are not the active offer until open enrollment is opened in BerniePortal.

Configure Upcoming Offer as the full suite of benefits employees should have after open enrollment. When open enrollment opens, plans in Upcoming Offer move to Current Offer, and new hires enroll from Current Offer.

To configure Upcoming Offer for a subgroup, see How to Configure Upcoming Offer - Benefits.

When open enrollment starts

Opening enrollment in BerniePortal moves offer plans for subgroups that have an Upcoming Offer configured:
  • Plans in Current Offer move to Prior Offer.
  • Plans in Upcoming Offer move to Current Offer.
  • Upcoming Offer is cleared for those subgroups.

After that move, Current Offer holds the newly active plans, and Prior Offer holds the previous Current Offer plans.
