How to Approve and Deny PTO Requests

Time off requests must be approved or denied by the employee’s designated PTO Approver.

To access: 
  1. Log in to BerniePortal as a PTO Approver
  2. From the To-Do List on the Home page, click on the employee’s name under “PTO Requests”



To approve or deny an individual request:
  1. Go to the “Approver PTO Requests” section
  2. Under “Pending Requests,” you’ll see all open requests with the following information listed for your reference:
    1. Employee name- Identifies who submitted the request for easy recognition and follow up
    2. Type- Shows the category of time off requested (PTO, vacation, sick leave, personal days, etc.)
    3. Start and End dates- Defines the exact timeframe of the requested absence for scheduling considerations
    4. Amount Requested- Displays the total days/hours that will be deducted from the employee's balance if approved
    5. Current Balance- Shows the employee's available PTO before this request is processed
    6. Post Approval Balance- Previews what the employee's balance will be after approval, helping you assess if they have sufficient time available
    7. Notes- View any explanatory notes the employee included with their request by hovering over the note bubble icon
  3. ​Hover over the action wheel next to the request you’d like to review
  4. Select “Approve” or “Deny”
Note: Depending on your organization’s email settings, employees may receive an automatic notification when their request is approved or denied. Learn more here


To approve or deny requests in mass:
  1. Select “Approve All”
  2. When the Approve All confirmation modal appears, click “OK"
