Turn on the spousal surcharge to charge employees an additional amount when their spouse has access to health insurance through their own employer but enrolls in coverage under this employer's plan instead. Set the surcharge dollar amount separately on each Benefits subgroup.
Who can turn this on
Employer Administrators with Benefits enabled manage the spousal surcharge setting on Benefits Settings. Users masquerading as the employer use the same path. Benefits Feature Admins use a separate Settings page under Subgroups that does not include this setting.
To turn on the spousal surcharge:
- Select Benefits in the top navigation menu.
- Select Settings in the secondary navigation menu.
- Select General from the left side menu.
- Under Charge spouses more for health insurance if they have access to it through their own job, select Yes to enable the surcharge, or No to turn it off.
BerniePortal blocks turning on the spousal surcharge while Health reimbursement? is set to Yes under Defined Contribution, showing the message "You cannot turn this on because you have Health reimbursement enabled." Set Health reimbursement? to No first if you need to turn on the spousal surcharge.
