How to Complete Employer Portion of I-9 Onboarding Document
Once an employee submits their I-9 in BerniePortal, you're just one step away from completing their onboarding journey. A quick administrator review and approval of their documents will finalize the entire process.
To access:
- Incomplete I-9 documents can be accessed three ways in BerniePortal-
- Via the "To Do" list on the Home Screen

- Via an employee’s “I-9 Badge” in the Employee List

- Via an employee’s onboarding area in their Employee Profile

Via the “To Do” list:
- Check out this article for detailed instructions on how to access and approve an employee’s I-9 directly from the To-Do list
Via an employees “I-9 Badge”:
- Select the “Employees” tab in the top navigation menu
- Locate the employee and click their "I-9 Badge"

- This will redirect the Administrator to the employee’s onboarding area within their Employee Profile- Find further instructions below
Via an employees onboarding area:
- Select the “Employees” tab in the top navigation menu
- Select the employee’s name, then select “Onboarding” in the employee's profile menu, then “Current Documents”
- Locate the I-9 listed under "Incomplete (Employer Information Needed)"
- Hover over the action wheel for the I-9 and select "Complete."

- Select "Download PDF" to review the employee's form and supporting documentation
- Fill in the required employer fields and click "Submit & Send"
- The I-9 will move to "Complete" status, the employee's I-9 badge will disappear, and they'll be removed from your "To Do" list
Note: When employees complete their I-9, they must select their documentation type-
- List A: One form of ID (e.g., passport, driver's license with I-94)
- Lists B & C: One ID from List B AND one from List C
If wrong fields appear when you're completing the employer section, it means the employee selected the incorrect documentation list. Simply submit an "Edit Request" to prompt the employee to update and resubmit their form!
