As an employer, use the Termination Reasons page in Benefits Settings to manage the reasons available when terminating an employee in BerniePortal. BerniePortal includes three default reasons — Resignation, For Cause, and Other — and you can add reasons specific to your organization. Termination reasons also appear on employer reports.
Access Termination Reasons
- Select Benefits in the top navigation bar.
- Select Settings in the secondary navigation bar.
- Select Termination Reasons in the left-side menu.
Add a Termination Reason
- Enter a name in the Reason for Termination field.
- Select Add.
Termination reason names must be unique and can't exceed 255 characters; entering a duplicate returns an error asking you to enter another reason.
The default reasons — Resignation, For Cause, and Other — can't be edited or deleted, but you can update their COBRA / Mini-COBRA eligibility and reorder them the same as custom reasons.
Edit a Custom Termination Reason
- Select the custom termination reason you want to edit.
- Update the name in the Reason field.
- Select Save.
Delete a Custom Termination Reason
- Select the gear icon next to the custom termination reason you want to delete.
- Select Delete.
- Select OK to confirm.
Deleting a termination reason can't be undone.
Set COBRA / Mini-COBRA Eligibility
- Select or clear the checkbox under ELIGIBLE FOR COBRA / MINI COBRA? for a termination reason.
Reorder Termination Reasons
- Select the drag handle to the left of a termination reason and drag it to a new position in the list.
