State Tax Setup and State Tax IDs
When employees perform work in a state, employers typically need state tax IDs with that state's agencies so withholdings and unemployment contributions can be remitted correctly.
What Are State Tax IDs
- SITW ID (State Income Tax Withholding) — usually from the Department of Revenue; used for state income tax withheld from pay.
- SUI ID (State Unemployment Insurance) — usually from the Department of Labor; used for state unemployment contributions.
Both are generally required in states where you have employees performing work. See the Payroll Tax Glossary for related acronyms.
When You Need an ID
- You hire someone who works in a state where you are not registered
- An employee moves to (or begins working from) a state where you are not registered
- You expand operations into a new state
How to Obtain an ID
Option 1 — Apply directly: Most states let employers register online at no charge. IDs are often issued within about two weeks.
Option 2 — Ask BerniePortal to apply: Employer Success can apply on your behalf for a fee. Email help@bernieportal.com, complete the application form they provide, and return it so registration can begin. Confirm current fees with your account manager.
Applied For Status
While an ID is pending, the tax team can add the state tax code with an Applied For status so withholdings continue during the wait. When the official ID arrives, your account is updated with the final number. Email new IDs to help@bernieportal.com.
