Employers and Feature Admins can terminate an employee from the Employees list. Termination ends the employee’s active employment status in BerniePortal, including benefits eligibility tied to that employment.
When you select Terminate, the employee immediately loses access to their BerniePortal account, regardless of the Last day of work you enter. If the employee is moving to COBRA, they keep COBRA access in BerniePortal and lose access to other features.
To terminate an employee:
- Select Employees in the top navigation menu.
- Find the employee and hover over their action wheel.
- Select Terminate. If the employee is already on COBRA, the action is labeled Terminate COBRA.
- Enter the employee’s Last day of work (MM/DD/YYYY). If the employee has direct reports, assign a new Manager when the field appears.
- Select a Reason for termination. Default reasons include Resignation, For Cause, and Other. Selecting Other requires you to enter a specific reason.
- If Offboarding Checklist appears, optionally choose a checklist (or leave none). For more detail, see Assigning Offboarding Checklists.
- If COBRA Subgroup appears, select the subgroup.
- Select Terminate.
The employee remains on the Employees list with a Terminated status unless you permanently delete them. To bring a terminated employee back, see How to Reinstate an Employee.
To permanently delete a terminated employee:
- On the Employees list, find the terminated employee and hover over their action wheel.
- Select Delete.
- Confirm when prompted: Are you sure you want to delete this employee?
Deleted employees remain in Recycle Bin for 30 days. Employers can open Recycle Bin from the trash icon in the top navigation, or from More → Recycle Bin when using the icon navigation.
