Use the Benefits tab on an employee's profile to review elections by benefit type, change eligible plan effective dates, and approve or deny pending evidence of insurability (EOI).
Who this is for
Employers can open Benefits, change eligible effective dates on Plans, and approve or deny pending EOIs. Benefits Feature Admins assigned to the employee can approve or deny pending EOIs. Employees view their own elections under Benefits → My Plans and cannot change effective dates or process EOIs from the employee profile.
To access:
- Select Employees in the top navigation.
- Select the employee's name to open their profile.
- Select Benefits in the employee profile navigation.
Benefits includes Plans (election overview and effective dates) and Pending EOI (EOI actions). The Benefits tab appears when Benefits is enabled for the employer and the employee has enrolled plan data.
Change a plan effective date
On Plans, each election row shows benefit type, plan name, coverage tier, effective date, and cost. A pencil icon appears next to an effective date when that date is within 90 days before or after today.
To change an effective date:
- On Plans, select the pencil icon next to the effective date for the plan.
- Select the new date on the calendar. BerniePortal saves the change when the selected date is within 90 days before or after today.
Changing an effective date updates the plan effective date (and related dependent/spouse dates when applicable), regenerates the employee's election PDF, and stores the change for payroll processing. There is no undo control for this change.
Approve or deny a pending EOI
Use Pending EOI when a coverage amount still needs an EOI decision. If a row shows Pending approval from carrier., manual approve/deny is not available for that election.
To approve:
- Select Pending EOI.
- In the Actions column, hover over the cog icon and select Approved.
- Select an Effective Date.
- Edit the email message text if needed.
- Select the certification checkbox, then select SEND.
Approving an EOI emails the employee, regenerates the employee's election PDF, and stores benefit election changes for payroll.
To deny:
- Select Pending EOI.
- In the Actions column, hover over the cog icon and select Denied.
- Edit the email message text if needed.
- Select the certification checkbox, then select SEND.
Denying an EOI emails the employee and regenerates the employee's election PDF.
