My highest performing salesperson wants to be promoted to the open manager role. Thing is, he’s the highest performer—we can’t really afford to remove him from that role. Any advice?

My highest performing salesperson wants to be promoted to the open manager role. Thing is, he’s the highest performer—we can’t really afford to remove him from that role. Any advice?

I don’t want to hurt his feelings, but I’m worried he will quit if he doesn’t get this promotion.
